Non-immigrant Visas - Introduction
Nonimmigrant visas are issued to persons who are entering the United States for a temporary stay or for a fixed period. These visas do not confer the status of permanent residence on the recipient. Most of these visas require that the visa holder maintain a residence outside the United States to which they will return when their visa expires. Nevertheless, nonimmigrant visa holders adjust may, and many do, adjust their status to permanent residence. The U.S. immigration laws provide that every foreign national (other than H1s or Ls) will be presumed to be an immigrant unless he or she establishes that he or she is entitled to a nonimmigrant status.
