A major computer company is under investigation by the U.S. Government for a possible discrimination against American workers in favor of foreign professionals.
The U.S. government is looking into claims that Sun Microsystems Inc., a major computer company, discriminated against U.S. workers in favor of foreign workers on temporary work visas last November.
According to Sun’s spokeswoman Diane Carlini, the U.S. Department of Labor and the U.S. Department of Justice started their preliminary investigation of the company labor practice after a former Sun employee, Guy Santiglia, failed a complaint in April 2002.
Guy Santiglia claims that the company laid off over 3,900 workers in last October and then hired foreign workers on H1-B visas in order to cut expenses and save money. He also claims that foreign workers get paid less than American workers.
Though Sun rejects Mr. Santiglia’s accusations, declaring that the company hiring practice is based on person’s qualification rather then on person’s residence, the case may get a very negative connotation in the press and further support a move by Congressman Rep. Tom Tancredo to cut H1-B visa cap.
