Biden's Immigration Reform
Little is known of Biden's legislative proposal's specific provisions, but it is likely t follow the broad outlines of past immigration reform efforts.
Under the legislation, those living in the U.S. as of January 1, 2021, without legal status would have a five-year path to temporary legal status, or a green card, if they pass background checks, pay taxes, and meet other basic requirements. From there, it is a three-year path to naturalization if they decide to seek citizenship.
For some immigrants, the process would be faster. So-called Dreamers, young people who came to the U.S. illegally as children and farmworkers and people in temporary protected status, could more immediately qualify for green cards if they are working, in school, or compliance with other requirements.
